We live in a media-saturated world.  Some people leave their TV's on 24 hours a day.  When going in the car, the radio or CD player goes on instantly.  When exercising, jogging or taking walks, it's a Walkman or MP3 player.  We need to take time each day, turn off the noise, and just sit quietly before the Lord, or walk, or drive, or whatever we're doing.
All through the Scriptures this truth is brought out.  Elijah hears God in the "tiny WHISPERING sound" 1 Kings 19:12-13.  "...the LORD is in his holy temple; SILENCE before him, all the earth!  Habakkuk 2:20.  And also in the book of Isaiah, "By waiting and by CALM you shall be saved, in QUIET and trust your strength lies" (30:15).

Turning to the New Testament and our Blessed Mother at that first Christmas, she "pondered all these things in her heart" (Luke 2:19).  Ponder means "to think or consider especially quietly, soberly, and deeply."  Finally, our Lord Jesus, in several places in Scripture, is said to have gone off by himself to pray, like in Mark 1:35, "Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed."

To have a relationship with someone, we need to spend time with them.  To communicate, we have to talk and listen.  We can scarcely do either if we have constant noise and distractions.  So make time for the Lord.  He loves you and desires you to talk with Him, listen to Him, and follow Him, until you are safe and sound with Him in Heaven.  Whether in Eucharistic Adoration or behind closed doors, spend quiet time with Jesus!
